Infections of the skin may develop on their own, or may follow an injury such as a cut or insect sting. Usually there is redness, swelling, pain, and sometimes red streaks in the area of the infection. Minor skin infections may be treated with topical antibiotics in the early stages, but oral medicines are often needed. If the antibiotics are not helping the infection, hospital care and IV antibiotic treatment may be needed. You may require a tetanus booster if you are not current with your immunizations. Most often skin infections can be treated with oral antibiotic medicine and proper rest and elevation of the affected area until the infection improves. Please see your ZoomCare physician if the pain and swelling from your infection do not improve within 2 days.
