Greetings,
reception area

Since opening ZoomCare at Bridgeport Village we've been looking for a better way to stay in touch with people we consider to be part of our community. We hope you find ZoomNews useful. One of the things that makes ZoomCare different is our commitment to continual improvement. We'll be using this newsletter to introduce improvements, new services and specials. Of course, if you would prefer to not receive news from us, please just unsubscribe at the bottom of this page.

We thought we would begin by addressing a question we are often asked: "Why ZoomCare?"

We've been friends since college. We went our own ways for medical training but reunited in Portland and have been working together since. Over countless coffee shop discussions through the years we kept coming back to the idea that we could make health care simpler, more personal, even more fun, while providing the highest quality care.

The result is ZoomCare. Our mission is to provide the most convenient medical care anywhere. We really hope you'll have the chance to try us out and let us know what you think. We have provided our personal email addresses below so you can contact us.

While there are a lot of things that make ZoomCare special, such as being open 7 days a week (including evenings), our onsite pharmacy, anytime walk-ins plus online scheduling, everything we do begins with our fantastic team of Doctors and Associates. When you visit ZoomCare you'll be greeted by one of our Associates who are here to ensure you have a great experience. We are very proud of our Associates - not only are they smart, caring, and well-trained - but they have the authority to ensure you are satisfied.

This brings us to our BIG NEWS! We are very pleased to welcome to our team, Dr. Jeffrey Katz. Few doctors meet our standards. Our doctors must not only meet a high standard of training and experience, but must have the ZoomCare bedside manner. When you meet Dr. Katz we're sure you'll understand.

Wishing you the best of health,

Dr Jeff Katz
Please join ZoomCare in welcoming our newest staff member, Dr. Jeffrey Katz. Dr. Katz joined ZoomCare on October 18th. He brings with him the dedication to excellent care and diverse experience that makes ZoomCare's doctors so personable and caring.

Next time you're in our office at Bridgeport Village you can ask Dr. Katz about his time in Cordova, Alaska. Cordova is on the Prince William Sound, surrounded by mountains and accessible only by boat or plane. For a brief time Dr. Katz was the only physician in town.

"My adventure in Alaska was very much like we all envision from the television show 'Northern Exposure'," says Dr. Katz. "Indeed, the locals even nicknamed me 'Fleischman' after the fictional doctor Joel Fleischman on 'Northern Exposure'."

Dr. Katz spends a lot of his free time hiking in southwest Portland's Forest Park with his wife, Michelle, his son, Avi, and their chocolate Labrador, Annie. Having lived all over the country from Southern California to Kansas to Virginia, Dr. Katz describes visiting Portland for the first time as "love at first sight." He enjoys the northwest weather and distinct seasons and says, "It could rain more and I'd be happy."

You might be hard pressed to find a doctor with Dr. Katz's diverse experience who's also an avid writer. Majoring in creative writing while he was an undergraduate at the University of Kansas gave Dr. Katz the opportunity to become an active writer. He continues to write short stories and screenplays and has had poems published in regional and national journals.

Flu
Cold and flu season is on its way. Here are a few tips on how to take care of yourself and your family.

Question: "What causes colds and the flu?"
Answer: More than 100 different viruses can cause colds. There aren't as many viruses that cause the flu. That's why there is a shot for the flu and not for colds. To keep from getting the flu, all children between six months and five years of age, adults older than 50 years, and people with asthma or lung problems should get a flu shot every October or November.

Question: What can I do to feel better?
Answer: There is no cure for a cold or the flu. Although antibiotics don't work against viruses, there is a medicine that can shorten the course of the flu if you start within two days from the onset of symptoms. Otherwise, we can alleviate some of the symptoms while your body fights off the infection.

Ways to treat cold and flu symptoms:
  • Stay home and rest, especially while you have a fever.
  • Drink plenty of fluids such as water, fruit juices and clear soup.
  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • Gargle with warm salt water a few times a day if you have a sore throat.
(The information above was summarized by the American Academy of Family Physicians, October 2006.)

ZoomCare provides flu shots for $20.
Most insurance plans cover flu shots.
Marissa
If you've already visited our office you probably recognize our Associates: Marissa Crnkovich, Catherine Johnson and Jessica Hills. ZoomCare Associates are here to ensure that your visit lives up to ZoomCare's mission: the most convenient medical care anywhere.
Marissa Crnkovich loves traveling and spends her freetime cooking lasagne, enchiladas and Jessica's personal favorite, "cavity-maker chocolate cake." Marissa attended the University of Portland, where she earned a BS in biology and was also a collegiate golfer. She's currently participating in the Women's Cancer Screening service project focusing on preventing cervical and breast cancer in Honduran women and adolescent girls. Born and raised in St.Paul, Minnesota, Marissa enjoys living in Portland. A few of her favorite areas in Portland include Hoyt Arboretum and Forest Park. Marissa also enjoys local restaurants such as Pambiche, Ringside and Typhoon.
Catherine Johnson is a Reno, Nevada native and enjoys reading, skiing and watching movies with her husband and her "spoiled rotten" step-cat. Catherine has a BA in communications from California State Fullerton and has experience in all areas of a medical office, including billing, front office and workers' compensation claims.
Jessica Hills hails from New Hampshire and came out West to complete her degree in biology and political science. Back in New Hampshire she helped set up a surgical unit. As if that weren't enough, Jessica is a linguist at heart and as all who meet her soon learn, she is known for her warmth and friendliness.
